Cosmic rays continue to reach the surface of the earth: due to their interaction with soil, plants, and water molecules present in the snow, a suspended neutron "fog" is formed. The CRNS probe (cosmic ray neutron sensing) can count these neutrons to determine the moisture present in the soil, biomass and snow.
But why use cosmic rays to measure soil moisture, BWE and SWE? Currently available technologies range from invasive point-scale methods to satellite remote sensing. CRNS has many advantages, bridging the gap between point measurement and satellite:
