Product Overview
Visualization and Quantification of Charge Migration in Advanced Dielectrics
The Pulsed Electro-Acoustic (PEA) Analysis System is a laboratory-based testing platform designed to facilitate controlled investigations into charge accumulation and migration behaviors within various dielectric materials. These studies are critical for understanding existing materials and supporting the development of advanced materials aimed at mitigating charge accumulation and dielectric breakdown issues.
PEA Testing Apparatus
PEA Technology
The PEA system is specifically designed to measure charge distribution embedded within dielectric films and insulators. This method is based on the application of a pulsed electric field to the dielectric film. The pulsed field imparts momentum to the embedded free charges, generating an ultrasonic wave detectable by a piezoelectric sensor. The sensor converts mechanical energy into an electrical signal representing the ultrasonic waveform. Digitization and analysis of this waveform enable the determination of the position and quantity of the embedded charges.
Supporting Dielectric Material Development Across Multiple Applications
PEA technology is widely applied in the study of dielectric materials used in high-voltage transmission lines and spacecraft insulation layers. Charge accumulation in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable insulators can reduce the operational lifespan of these materials within power grids. A known cause of satellite failure is electronic malfunctions resulting from electrostatic discharge events triggered by charges embedded in dielectric materials. Electrons from solar wind can become embedded in dielectric materials, and the accumulation of these charged particles (primarily electrons) may lead to electrostatic discharge events, potentially damaging satellite components.
PEA Material Research
The Box Elder Innovations PEA testing system is a laboratory-based platform offering software-controlled data acquisition, analysis tools, and waveform modeling to streamline, enhance understanding, and accelerate controlled studies of charge accumulation and migration behaviors in layered dielectric material systems.
