Non-invasive electrical capacitance tomography multiphase flow monitor AC-ECT

Detailed Introduction:
Capacitive Electrical Tomography (ECT) is a non-invasive imaging and measurement technology that can be used for real-time, online visualization of industrial processes by measuring the dielectric properties of materials, such as in oil pipelines, pharmaceutical fluidized beds, pneumatic conveyors, and coal-related processes. The basic function of ECT is to display a cross-sectional image of a pipe or vessel.
From the images, useful information can be obtained, such as phase fractions and the distribution of air/coal handling. In principle, ECT is similar to CT scanners used in hospitals. Compared to other industrial tomography methods, ECT has advantages such as low cost, fast imaging speed, safe operation without radiation, non-invasiveness, flexible sizing (diameters from 1 cm to 1 meter), resistance to high temperature and high pressure, and suitability for harsh environments.
System Hardware
Our AC-ECT system adopts high-frequency sinusoidal excitation and phase-sensitive detection (PSD) based on an AC capacitive measurement circuit. The AC-based design enables precise capacitance measurement through PSD, with an accuracy of up to 0.0001 pF. A paper on the hardware design of the AC-ECT system was awarded the IEE Ayrton Premium. The features of our AC-ECT system hardware are as follows:
1.It has a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 73 dB, which is significantly higher than any other ECT system;
2.It can operate up to 16 channels in parallel, generating image data at a rate of 300 frames per second for an 8-electrode ECT sensor;
3.It uses a PCI data acquisition card or a PCMCIA card, which provides a real-time interface. Note that real-time operation is never achievable via USB;
4.Our AC-ECT system is equipped with anti-static protection, which is important for gas/solid flow measurement. However, no other company offers such a feature;
5.As an option, we can provide remote control with a distance of up to 300 meters between the process and the control room.

The system software is developed using 32-bit Visual C++ programming. Multiple image reconstruction algorithms have been implemented in the software, including:
1.Linear Back Projection (LBP), which allows high-speed image generation;
2.Landweber Iteration, which produces high-quality images at a reduced speed;
3.Prior-Iteration Algorithm, which enables high-speed generation of high-quality images.
Our AC-ECT system is capable of operating with two ECT sensors simultaneously, i.e., using a dual-plane ECT sensor. With a dual-plane ECT sensor, it is possible to determine flow velocity through cross-correlation.

Our AC-ECT system has been applied in numerous industrial scenarios, such as:
Measuring gas/oil/water flow in oil pipelines,
Monitoring gas/solid distribution and moisture distribution in pharmaceutical fluidized beds,
Measuring gas/solid flow in pneumatic conveyors,
Monitoring clean gas/coal flow combustion in circulating fluidized beds.
In particular, several organizations are using our AC-ECT system under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, which is critically important for coal gasification processes aimed at reducing environmental pollution.
